Important Update

November 10, 2021

Dear KIPP ACCS Families,

As we told you in August, KIPP Albany was informed of an allegation by a former student that happened seven years ago.  We wanted to provide an update to that communication and our promised next steps, which included an investigation of the allegation.

The investigation was triggered in August by a former student’s allegation of past sexual abuse by an employee at KIPP Albany Community Middle School. The alleged conduct had not previously been known to KIPP Albany, Albany Community Charter School, or the authorities.  Following the protocols we have established, when the allegation was reported to KIPP Albany in August, we immediately contacted the police and New York State and began the internal investigation, carried out by an independent, outside counsel.  Additionally, the employee was placed on immediate leave and instructed to have no contact with current or former students.

While the investigation cannot conclusively confirm the initial allegation, the allegation was found to be credible based on interviews with both the former student and multiple former students who attended the school during the time period of the alleged abuse.  The employee in question chose not to cooperate with the internal investigation and submitted their resignation to school, which was accepted.

Importantly, the investigation did not uncover any additional allegations or incidents of misconduct.  Additionally, although this isolated incident is alleged to have occurred a number of years ago, moving forward, we will continue to thoroughly review all of our organizational policies and practices to ensure they protect every member of our community and our students have the tools and resources they need to ensure their safety.

Allegations of this nature can bring up a lot of emotion and we all process that differently depending on our personal histories and relationships. If you or your student need additional support, we have an experienced team of counselors and social workers on our staff that can assist students or parents. If you or your child needs support or resources, please contact your school’s principal or counselor/social worker.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about this or any other matter regarding student safety, please reach out to me or a member of the school leadership team.  Ensuring our schools operate at the highest levels of trust, integrity and safety is the standard we expect and to which we hold every member of our team accountable to everyday.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Valle
